The city of Bendigo is located in Australia and is home to over 100,000 residents. There are many interesting historical sites located within the city’s boundaries that make for an insightful visit.
In 1853, Bendigo was named Sandhurst in commemoration of the Duke’s role as Governor-General. The wealth generated during this period is reflected today in Victoria’s architectural heritage, which reflects a 19th-century gold-mining economy.
A new wave of growth began in the 1930s as Bendigo consolidated its position as a manufacturing and regional service centre after being hit hard during Australia’s gold rush. Although still prevalent, the population has recently been growing more rapidly around suburban areas rather than within central districts that are home to numerous historic buildings from the 19th century boom period.
Today, the region’s proximity to Melbourne has made Bendigo one of the fastest-growing regional centres in Victoria.
The central part of Bendigo consists of around 20 blocks and is mixed-use. The main street that runs through this area is Midland Highway, Pall Mall’s section as well known as the name for it, while Hargreaves mall serves as the city centre with its shopping areas.
As a legacy of the gold boom, Bendigo has many ornate buildings built in a late-Victorian colonial style. Prominent buildings include The Town Hall, The Post Office, Law Courts, and the Shamrock Hotel Institute Of Technology Memo.
