Door Manufacturing, Lamination and Veneer Industries Drive Demand For PVA and PUR Adhesives

New materials and processes are key drivers of an evolving door manufacturing industry. Customers are becoming increasingly demanding and whether installing doors in a new house or replacing them to improve aesthetics, they have more choices than ever. 

Accordingly, adhesives used in the door manufacture and lamination industry need to demonstrate more flexibility, better adhesion performance,  high-end use reliability and reduced time to bond.  Polyvinyl (PVA) acetates and Polyurethane (PUR) adhesives are widely used in the industry to improve the durability and look of interior and exterior doors.

Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesives are low-cost water soluble adhesives and are particularly suited for glueing wood. The adhesive is flexible and creates a very strong bond.  A 50/50 mixture of PVA and water makes an excellent sealant for plaster in preparation for painting or wallpapering.   It is ideally suited for use with chipboards, plywoods and MDFs. It can also be used as a high-performance sealer,  bonding agent, primer and bonding agent. PVA sets best when there is good air circulation. It dries fast at room temperature and delivers a very high bond strength. It is permanent and has a neutral pH value.

Polyurethane (PUR) adhesives combine aesthetics and performance. They are ideal for bonding fire-resistant and insulated composite door panels.  PUR adhesives bond well with wood and porous composites. SInce they do not contain water, there is no risk of swelling at the joints which is helpful with veneer laminating as cracking and buckling can be avoided.  The high initial strength of PUR adhesives and the absence of water have the added benefit of shortening the waiting time between gluing, machining and sanding. This results in significantly faster production processes.
